The Journey

From sobriety, to recovery, to a life worth living.

Recovery is not simply about staying sober. The Enthusiastic Approach helps young people move through three stages — each one bigger than the last.

01

Enthusiastic Sobriety

Breaking through isolation and connecting with others who understand. The first proof that life without substances doesn't have to be miserable.

02

Enthusiastic Recovery

Building healthy friendships, accountability, and confidence. Recovery Capital starts to stack up — the resources that make recovery last.

03

Enthusiastic Living

Purpose, leadership, and contribution. Recovery becomes a launchpad for a meaningful life, not just the absence of a problem.

Recovery isn't done alone

Stick with winners in order to grow.

Many young people enter recovery feeling isolated and misunderstood. Recovery meetings break through that isolation by surrounding them with people who get it — and give them an opportunity to do exactly what the second step asks.

Why Recovery Meetings Matter for Adolescents and Young Adults

Enthusiastic Sobriety · Recovery Support

When many young people first enter recovery, they often wonder: "Why do I have to go to meetings?" The honest answer is that recovery meetings provide connection, accountability, community, and hope.

Programs like The Crossroads Program, The Insight Program, The Cornerstone Program, The Pathway Program, and The Full Circle Program have long recognized that recovery meetings are one of the most effective tools for helping adolescents and transition-aged youth build lasting recovery.

Recovery is not meant to be done alone

Many young people entering recovery feel isolated, misunderstood, or disconnected. Recovery meetings help break through that isolation by connecting them with others who understand exactly what they're going through.

The Enthusiastic Approach teaches that the opposite of addiction is connection.

Meetings help young people connect with recovery peers, mentors, sponsors, families, trusted adults, and positive role models.

The second step

The second step of all Enthusiastic Approach programs states: "We found it necessary to Stick With Winners in order to grow." Recovery meetings provide an opportunity to do exactly that — and to build the healthy friendships, communication skills, confidence, accountability, and community connection that make up Recovery Capital.

Meetings are only part of the solution

A common misconception is that meetings alone create recovery. Meetings matter, but recovery is built through connection, community, and shared experiences. That's why the Enthusiastic Approach places such a strong emphasis on sober social activities.

Building recovery through fun

Every Friday and Saturday night, young people have opportunities to participate in sober social activities — sumo wrestling, crab soccer, dances, sober concerts, campouts, service projects, and more. For many adolescents, substance use had become connected to socializing, excitement, and belonging. These activities help them discover that connection, laughter, and friendship are still possible without alcohol or drugs.

The real purpose of recovery meetings

Recovery meetings help young people move from Enthusiastic Sobriety to Enthusiastic Recovery and ultimately to Enthusiastic Living — because recovery is not simply about staying sober. Recovery is about learning how to live.

Why Recovery Capital Matters for Adolescents and Transition-Aged Youth

Enthusiastic Sobriety · Recovery Science

One of the most important concepts in modern recovery science is Recovery Capital — the internal and external resources that help individuals initiate, maintain, and strengthen recovery over time.

For adolescents and young adults, recovery is about more than stopping substance use. It involves building the relationships, skills, opportunities, and supports necessary to create a meaningful life.

The four kinds of Recovery Capital

Social

Healthy friendships, recovery peers, family support, and trusted mentors.

Human

Education, job skills, emotional regulation, self-confidence, and problem-solving abilities.

Community

Recovery support services, recovery communities and meetings, positive recreation, and service opportunities.

Physical

Housing stability, transportation, healthcare access, and financial stability.

Recovery is not the absence of substance use. It's the presence of healthy supports, meaningful opportunities, and strong relationships.

Why it matters for young people

Adolescents and transition-aged youth are still developing emotionally, socially, academically, and professionally. Many have experienced disruptions in family relationships, peer networks, education, employment, self-esteem, and community involvement. Recovery Capital helps rebuild these areas and provides a foundation for future success.

The Enthusiastic Approach and Recovery Capital

The Enthusiastic Approach has long focused on helping young people build Recovery Capital through connection, accountability, leadership, service, and family involvement. Recovery support services — peer mentoring, family education, leadership development, sober social activities, recovery coaching, and alumni involvement — help young people keep building it long after formal treatment ends.

The future of recovery

As recovery science evolves, it's increasingly clear that lasting recovery depends not only on abstinence but on relationships, opportunities, purpose, community, and hope. Recovery Capital provides the foundation. The Enthusiastic Approach provides the pathway. Together, they help young people build lives worth protecting.
